Mark began his career in New Zealand and spent three years reporting in Johannesburg, South Africa before coming to Australia in 1979. He is the Canberra-based health correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. He has spent 15 of his 41 years in journalism covering health related issues. He was medical reporter with The Age in the early 1980s when the mega story of the times was a sexual health issue testing the judgement of editors - the emergence of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. For the past decade he has covered national health policy in Canberra. His other appointments have included spells as news editor of The Age and chief of staff at the Canberra Times.
