When problems with anger (as well as other emotions) develop, counsellors are often asked to help those individuals either become better at expressing their anger or more effective at controlling their anger. Attachment theory is an ideal lens to understand anger. Longitudinal studies of attachment have demonstrated a high continuity between infant attachment and adult attachment patterns and this gives counsellors a new paradigm for understanding affect regulation strategies, interpersonal relationship dynamics and the therapeutic alliance.
With the improvement of scanning technology in the late twentieth century, we can now literally peek into the human brain as it is in the process of experiencing emotions, such as anger. As a result, the affective neurosciences have revolutionised our understanding of anger – its source point in the brain, its relationship to the body, and its relationship to cognition. This presentation will discuss both the attachment and neurobiological correlates of anger. Participants will learn how attachment theory can be a useful frame for understanding both the healthy expression of anger, as well as its maladaptive manifestation. They will also become more informed of the latest advances in the affective neurosciences when addressing problems in the regulation of anger as well as other emotions.
The counselling and psychotherapy fields are now at a point in their evolution where they are being challenged to produce evidence to demonstrate their effectiveness for clients, in order to raise the profile of the profession with governments and the community. In assessing the effectiveness of an approach to counselling and psychotherapy, the question “what constitutes effectiveness and how is this seen” must be considered. This raises the question of the lens used for looking. In this presentation I will show how we live in the tiparadigm, which focuses on process, on an unfolding stream of awareness that recognizes both the subtle unseen forces of the universe as well as manifest reality. It sees the human being as an incarnating spirit infusing every aspect of the physical substance (body) with consciousness and mediated by soul/psyche.
Personal growth, increased self-awareness, and inter and intrapersonal maturation have long been seen as important training dimensions for those involved in counselling. The current study aimed to build on existing knowledge in this area through use of empirically validated measures of three well-described developmentally-orientated psychological constructs Bowen's Differentiation of Self (DoS), Batson's Religious Quest (Quest) and Perry's Epistemological Development (ED) to evaluate the effectiveness of the training programs in facilitating the interpersonal, intrapersonal, spiritual and epistemological maturation of counselling students.
Mental illness is the single largest cause of disability in Australia, accounting for nearly 30 per cent of the burden of non-fatal disease; while one in five Australians will experience symptoms of mental illness at some stage in their lives. These quite alarming statistics have given rise to the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) listing mental health as one of the top eight national health priority areas in Australia; and the Commonwealth Government identifying increasing proportions of the health budget to progress mental health reform.
