Anne talks about family relationships, including gender and adolescence perspectives applied to the work with young people living between cultures. Understanding for example the ways girls and boys grow and interact in a context of cultural transition is essential to provide responsive and nurturing support. Faced with multiple pressures and complex challenges, many young people from refugee backgrounds are compelled to play a balancing act between their own and others beliefs, expectations, values and aspirations.
There are also differences in how young men and women experience the process of cultural transition and, services need to keep gender in mind when designing services for and engaging with youth. This seminar will use case studies to focus our discussions, and participants would be able to share their experiences of working with young people from refugee backgrounds and their families.
