Dr David Leary, Director of the Come In Youth Resource Centre, is interviewed by Peter Blake. Dr. Leary initially describes the work of the Come In Centre and the setting that is provided for very troubled and marginalised young people. He explains that the conceptual framework behind the work is psychoanalytic. He also explains how the Centre has adapted this thinking in the various activities that they offer. Dr Leary also discusses the important interplay of the young person’s inner and outer worlds, and how the external setting has to initially provide a holding of the external chaos and so engender a sense of safety for the young person. Only when this begins to take effect can the therapist eventually begin to work with the distress of the young person’s inner world.
