The Conversational Model developed from the efforts of Russell Meares and the late Robert Hobson to provide an effective psychotherapy for patients who did not respond or reacted adversely to the current modalities of psychotherapy. It is now one of the best-researched models of psychotherapy for Borderline Personality Disorder. For a clinician, the outcome studies of effectiveness are crucial. At the same time, studies of clinical phenomena such as auditory hallucinations, papers on individual case studies and research in linguistics and neuroscience enliven and broaden our engagement with the person we sit with in therapy. In clinical work we might also come across aspects of psychotherapy – our client’s or our own experiences – that we would like to explore further or write up and share with colleagues to inspire or inform or even challenge.
