This presentation is a review of the critical incidents and changes that occur in families with a member who has an intellectual or developmental disability. The psychological impact of these changes, in terms of thinking, feeling and doing are discussed.

A brief summary of a perspective of the process of personality development and psychological defensive mechanisms is used to give a framework to a range of strategies that can be implemented to address the setbacks experienced in a way that offers optimal resolution.

The presentation is accompanied by a ‘Powerpoint’ visual guide and concludes with a discussion as to how the format can be used for the delivery of a variety of groups for the psychological component of patient or family information sessions.
