Ms Amber Elizabeth Gray, the Director of Restorative Resources Training & Consulting International, is interviewed by Nooria Mehraby on the basic theory of stress accumulation and secondary traumatization, or compassion fatigue, based on current neuropsychiatric research. In this interview Ms Gray discusses how to identify the “onset” of compassion fatigueand mitigate its effects which she illustrates with a personal account.
She also explores practical approaches for individuals and organizations working with complex emergencies and in clinical settings with survivors of human rights abuses so that they may mitigate the inevitable consequences of caring for survivors of trauma. She also suggests that organizations working in post-conflict and disaster situations can develop and implement staff support programs to mitigate secondary trauma in the workplace.
