A Brief Critique of Dream Interpretation between African and Western Cultures in South Africa

A Brief Critique of Dream Interpretation between African and Western Cultures in South Africa

Psychoanalysis is one of the oldest forms of psychotherapy and is widely practiced throughout the world. Using dream interpretation as an illustration, this presentation explores some of the challenges of applying psychoanalysis in the multicultural context of South Africa. These challenges include the tenets of dream interpretation, the influence of culture, language barriers, and a sense of curiosity on behalf of the therapist. In so doing, a scarcity of South African research will be highlighted. The challenges and suggestions for future research in South Africa will be discussed in an attempt to provide further direction to the application of psychoanalysis particularly as it pertains to dream analysis in the South African context.
