Considering assessment of attachment to God and spirituality as an aspect of psychological health and wellbeing

Increasingly the significance of spirituality is being considered when addressing and assessing psychological health and wellbeing. However this can present a challenge, especially for practitioners who might (i) be uncertain as to which assessment tools to select; (ii) lack confidence to discuss spirituality with their patients/clients; (iii) whom themselves are unaffiliated; and/or (iv) believe they require specialised training to administer measures of spirituality. This paper presents an overview of a range of measures that can be used to assess aspects of spiritual maturity and attachment to God, thereby providing practitioners with an insight into the spiritual life of their Christian clients/patients. We also present a simple template, still under assessment, that can be used with clients/patients to collaboratively discuss and assess attachment states of mind with respect to self and others, including God.
