HPV Infection in Men

HPV Infection in Men

On the other hand, many recent epidemiological studies have demonstrated that HPV infection can also occur in external genitalia, urinary tract, and oropharynx in men, and its prevalence even in healthy men is as high as that among healthy women. Furthermore, information on natural history of male HPV infection has been clarified recently, and most of HPV infection in men is cleared within two years, similar to women’s cases. In addition, HPV infections also have an important role for the development of penile cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, and anal cancer among men who have been considered to be only HPV transmission reservoirs to women. Almost 10% of the cancer burden worldwide has been linked to HPV infection.

Therefore, HPV vaccine has been also available against men worldwide, and a quadrivalent HPV vaccine type 6, 11, 16, 18 (Gardasil®; Merck & Co., Inc, North Carolina, USA.) has been developed and made available for men in over 70 countries. Some recent studies have demonstrated the efficacy of HPV vaccine for the development of genital HPV infections and external genital lesions in men. In this lecture, the recent knowledge on HPV infection in men and possibility of pathogenesis by HPV infection will be reviewed.
