Psycho-Social Determinants of Family Values of Undergraduate Students in a South African University

Data was collected using a family value validated questionnaire from a sample of 100 male and 100 female undergraduate students. All participants were randomly sampled using a table of random numbers. The validated questionnaire has four sections: Section A contained biographical information. Section B consists of 18 questions which are based on the family value. Section C consists of 27 questions based on relationships. Section D consists of 11 questions based on emotional distance.

Results showed that culture, age, social and economic status were good predictors of family values. The paper will report the statistically observed dynamics in family structure and relationships. The role of emotional support was also found to predict family values. In conclusion, some recommendations were made in line with the study’s findings. Some of the results are particularly important for young adults and their parents in terms of family management and conflict issues and particularly in a psychotherapeutic situation with families.
