The relationship between sexual self-concept and attachment style in married women

Sexual self-concept provides an understanding of the sexual aspects of a person, derived from experiences in the past, and refers to recent experience and conducts of sexual behaviour. This study aims to determine the relationship between sexual self-concept and attachment style in married women referred to the medical health centers in Tehran University of Medical Sciences (2013–2014).

Methods: This sectional research was conducted on 365 women in reproductive age who were referred to the medical health centers in Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Data collection instruments included attachment, sexual self-concept and demographic questionnaires which were filled-in as a self-report. SPSS software and descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, range of variations) and Pearson correlation coefficient were used in data analyses.

Results: The results indicated that there was a direct correlation between negative sexual self-concept and “anxious-preoccupied attachment (r = 0.377, p < 0.0001) and avoidant attachment (r = 0.325,p < 0.0001)”, and there was an inverse correlation between sexual self-concept and secure attachment (r = −0.223, p < 0.0001). Conversely, there was an inverse correlation between positive sexual self-concept and “anxious-preoccupied attachment (r = 0.03, p = −0.114) and avoidant attachment (r = 0.03, p = −0.114)”, and there was an inverse correlation between sexual self-concept and secure attachment (r = 0.145, p = 0.006).

Conclusion: The individuals who feel secure in relationship with their spouses express more positive sexual self-concept and have positive feelings about their sexual relationship. The individuals who feel insecure in relationship with their spouses express more negative feelings about their sexual relationship. Hence, it is forecasted that the individuals acquire positive sexual self-concept and healthy sexual behaviour by acquiring secure attachment style.
