Working Clinically with Tamil Asylum Seekers: the impact of Socio-Cultural-Political factors on Post Migration stress

When working with Tamil asylum seekers, a number of factors need to be considered such as previous trauma experience, caste, class, language, family history, family structure, living arrangements, relationship status and religion. Clinically appropriate counselling work can be achieved through the use of religious symbolism, folk stories that promote hope, re-telling trauma experiences through culturally appropriate language, exploring cultural norms when dealing with grief and loss, and traditional ways of coping with sadness.
