Method: Literature review in Pubmed and Medline databases. Data from own clinical practice.
Results: The data provided by the scientific evidence and the practice of care indicate that the main factors for its development include: poor health, side effects of certain medications and drugs of abuse, aging, depression, anxiety, stress, conflicts with body image, personality disorders, sexual dissatisfaction, relationship conflict, history of mistreatment, sexual abuse or both, and highly restrictive cultural or religious values.
Conclusions: To perform an adequate therapeutic approach, a complete clinical evaluation must be carried out, which should include medical history, sexual antecedents and sometimes physical examination. In this way we will be able to detect the different factors that can contribute to the development of sexual desire. Questions should be asked in a culturally careful manner, considering the background, lifestyle and situation of the relationship.
